Contemporary Art Glass and Unique Sculpture by Karen E. Woodward
News!
January 2010
1/28 Mark your calendars for April 3rd! I will be creating an original work of art live at the 2010 Wall Ball. This event supports the Saint Louis City Open Studio and Gallery (SCOSaG) which is a great place to take art classes and learn about art. This event includes a unique silent auction featuring the live creative process of 50+ local aritsts!! Be there! 7 PM - 12 AM at NEO on Locust at 2801 Locust Ave.
1/24 This is the card for my upcoming show at PHD. I think it is super cool. Jeff Kapfer will be exhibiting paintings of birds and I will have tons of glass bees, plus a few other works in the portfolio space. The bees will be flying around the gallery engaging in an assortment of bee activities. Working on this project has definitely been interesting as I have read and learned quite a bit about bee behaviors. The bees in the show will play with both traditional and nontraditional concepts about "the birds and the bees." It is going to be good!
1/11 Here is a sculpture for my upcoming show........
1/10 Look! Here is a recent picture of myself (photo below) No, not really... it is just an experimental piece with a murrini chip for the teeth. Things are getting strange around here. OK, back to work.

Happy New Year! Inquiring minds have requested that I explain how I create my work, so I will start with this: a view of my flameworking station. There is a torch, glass color rods, and a variety of shaping tools. For inspiration, there are a few of my doodle drawings in the background, plus a few little dude sculptures in the back corner. An explanation of large scale castings to come...

Education News: Really super fun kid stuff! Two of my favorite collectors, Max and Diane, helped put together a project for the school auction at Brookwood Elementary in Kansas City! Work from my Effigy Series helped to provide inspiration to the kids for the project. It is good to know that I am doing something positive for the education of today's youth! Learn about it here. Great job kids!!

Here it is - a detail image of my new larger work from the Vise Grip/ C Clamp Man series. I have been working on this series on for the past couple of years, and now it is big! The entire piece is about 3 ft. in length.

If you are doing some last minute stuff I just brought in a few new sculptures to the Craft Alliance Gallery. If you are there, check out the piece titled Red Spike. He is wack. Other news is that I will open an etsy shop sometime in the near future.

November 2009

Hi there! I've got a few cool things going on these days. The first is that I am getting ready for a show at PHD Gallery in March. I met the owner at my last show, and he invited me to exhibit some pieces in the Portfolio Space. Philip is hip to new things so it should be fun! The second is that I am working with the kilnworking director at Third Degree Glass Factory to create some larger scale cast pieces. They are in the kiln as we speak. The pieces are similar to my other works, just larger. This story is developing, so stay tuned for details.

Also, I am showing a few new pieces at the Craft Alliance Gallery. Make sure to ask Kris if she has all of the available pieces on display. There might be some in her office.

THANK YOU Dan for the macro lens! You are the best! Check out this pink dude!

September 2009

9/16 Thanks so much to everyone who made it out to the St. Louis Art Fair. I met a lot of new people, visited with friends, and got a lot of super cool ideas for new sculptures. I am going to play with my baby Jackie for a few days before I get back to the torch. More news soon!

August 2009

Make sure to check out the Lifestyles section of the St. Louis Post Dispatch on 8/22/09. I will be a featured artist in an article. A photographer came to my studio and took pictures for 2 hours. See the full article here.

Things are crazy hot here in my studio as I am getting ready for the St. Louis Art Fair. This will take place September 11, 12, and 13. I'll be in booth #303. If my art looks extra bizarre at the show, it is because I was as hot as a rotisserie chicken while I was working!

If you are out and about town in St. Louis, you can still see my work at the Craft Alliance Faculty Biennial and at my solo show at the Third Degree Glass Factory through August 18. If you can't make it to the show, click here, scroll to the bottom of the page, and select the slide show. There are 40 images from the opening night!

July 2009

Lots of stuff this month! I have a solo show of "coloring book" drawings and mixed media works at the Third Degree Glass Factory. This is a fun show and was installed by my good friends and fellow artists Michel Krevenas and Chuck Fuhry (thank you Michel and Chuck!). I am also exhibiting my work at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis as part of the City-Wide Open Studios event. You can also see a fun piece of mine at the Craft Alliance Faculty Biennial.

May 2009

On Thursday May 7 make sure to watch Great Day St. Louis on Channel 4 at 10:00 AM. The good people at Laumeier Sculpture Park will talk about this year's fair and will give sneak peak of some of my new work.

Hi there. Good news! A piece from the Rasta Man series was selected to be shown in the exhibit Perspectives: Traditions and Innovations in Glass Beads. This show will open during the 2009 Glass Art Society conference in NY. Also, the show at PISMO Gallery in Denver is up and running. Check out the press release for the show here. The Laumeier Contemporary Art Fair is May 8, 9, and 10. Hope to see you there!

April 2009

Keepin' busy. This sculpture is ready for the next show. He is glass, peyote stitch seed beads, and steel on an 8" x 10" steel panel. Check back later to see more dudes, including the Flying Bubble Gum Man and Mr. Egg.

March 2009

This month will be interesting as I was invited to be a juror for the Historic Shaw Art Fair! Also, construction for the Craft Alliance Glass Museum is underway. We are currently arranging pieces from the "permanent collection" of the Glass Studio for the new display. Check it out later this month!

Feb 2009

Hi everybody! I am back in the studio getting ready for a few new shows. In May I will have work at PISMO Gallery in Denver, CO for their annual bead invitational, and later that month I will exhibit at the Laumeier Contemporary Art Fair. The piece above is from my Rasta Man series and will be available at PISMO. Look for his picture in the next American Craft Magazine. Also, check out my work in the Winter 2008 issue of The Flow Magazine.

Thanks to everyone who made it out to see People, Planets, and Places at Bonsack Gallery. I gave a gallery talk to the sculpture students and they seemed to appreciate the work! If you missed the show you can still see it in my portfolio section.

Dec 2008

New works are currently on view at Bonsack Gallery from Dec 5 to Jan 13 in my show titled People, Planets, and Places. Click here to see more of the show. This body of work is further development of the work I exhibited at Third Degree Glass Factory.

Nov 2008

Hello. If you happen to be in Houston, please stop by Goldesberry Gallery on the Colquitt gallery row. I have some really fun pieces on display in a group show titled Strange Bedfellows. My work is mixed media with glass, but the rest of the show is mostly figurative works in ceramic. As stated by the curator, "Strange Bedfellows is an assemblage of artists working with craft media that expands upon, and transcends, typically conventional ideas about the aesthetic genre. The exhibition features work that presents odd, and sometimes larger-than-life, juxtapositions in depictions of the figure, whether straightforward or through anthropomorphized flora and fauna, and how it is handled in contemporary craft media."
