My
art is about personality, character, and attitude. With flameworked
glass, I create unique character portraits that explore facets of
the human psyche. With a bright palette of colors and simple, cartoon-like
imagery, my sculptures appear to be light hearted and comical, illustrating
both physical and psychological aspects of the individual. Wizards,
Chicken Smugglers, Demons, Gangsters, Poultry Chefs, and an assortment
of “little dudes” are to name a few of the characters
that appear in my work, and the list continues to grow.
Although
each piece can be appreciated for its individual qualities, my work
is often displayed as an installation or as a narrative group. It
does not take long for the viewer to see that the emergent properties
of these narratives actually transcend the local humor and whimsy,
revealing a more complex side to the work. As individual figures
and portraits are placed within a visual narrative, they take on
new meaning as they relate to one another. Some sculptures appear
to be engaged in conversation while others look at each other with
odd expressions. We as viewers are given the opportunity to interpret
each narrative and draw our own conclusions.
All
of my work, whether displayed as a single object, in a group, or
as an installation, is created with the intention of entertaining
the viewer in it’s exploration of personality and expression.
It is my hope that those who view my work can laugh, smile, and
realize that that art does not have to be serious to be meaningful.
